The local government ombudsman, Amerdeep Somal, has declared that the system supporting children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) in England is in “utter disarray” and requires a comprehensive overhaul. Somal highlighted significant issues including insufficient funding, overwhelmed social workers, and a lack of educational psychologists. The situation is exacerbated by a looming £5 billion debt crisis from overspending on SEND services. Somal called for a thorough review of the 2014 Children and Families Act and better allocation of resources to address these systemic problems. The government acknowledges the issues but notes that resolving them will take time and comprehensive action.
