In a letter to families of Julia de Burgos Elementary School on Friday, Principal Bianca Reyes said postings on social media alleging U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents (ICE) were at the school is a rumor. Reyes confirmed that agents have not been seen near or on school property.

Following the letter, the School District of Philadelphia released a statement reaffirming its commitment to creating safe, welcoming spaces for students and families.

“In alignment with the U.S. Constitution, Pennsylvania State law, and in the spirit of the Board of Education’s Welcoming Sanctuary Schools Resolution, this commitment includes all students, no matter their race, ethnicity, immigration status, national origin, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, familial status, religion, or person’s abilities,” said Tony B. Watlington, Sr., Ed.D., School District of Philadelphia Superintendent. “The District will comply with required laws, and school leaders have been provided guidance about how to protect our immigrant students’ rights.”
